18 May, 2007 Finally we got the Pub Walk off the ground to smashing start on Tuesday! And finally we got to see “Da Boss” Jeya in action! This definitely calls for a double celebration. As a result, I think we downed more beers than was usual (as you can judge by the photos we took below…)
And for our inaugural Pub Walk, we invited a few friends along to share our joy and pleasure, together with our Walkers. Read what our very first Walker on the Pub Walk, Anne Alfredson, had to say about The Tipple Exchange™ (we should rightly give her a medal for braving it out with us boozers!) "This tour stole the show. Mmmm... I think it was something to do with the 'Deer' or should I say ‘Deers'. I'm not sure which 'deer' caused me to sleep in until lunch time the next day... maybe it was the Speckled Hen or a wild tiger or two. Jeya has a wonderful way of adding spice and bringing to life the historic events which occurred in this fantastic area."
Excited now? Check out our tour schedule for more information and join us every Tuesday! 11 May, 2007 This was one research project in which everyone in the office jumped and fought to volunteer for… this was one project that got everyone thinking about it during office hours, after office hours, even bedtime hours! What IS this that got us all sleepless and excited?Presenting our latest Walk for May… THE TIPPLE EXCHANGE™ – our Boat Quay Pub Walk on Tuesdays, beginning from the 15 th ! On this trail, we will be bringing you stories surrounding the Singapore River, as well as some of the best drinking spots along the creek (don't worry, no drinking from the river. We won't allow it.).It was a hectic and tiring month for us, tasting different beers (till our tongues grew numb and everything tasted of beer and still does), chatting up different pub managers along the stretch to get you the best deals till our throats got dry (which we tried to redress by downing more beer), and walking up and down the river for the umpteenth time to ascertain the best routing to enjoy the view and the pubs (which got us really thirsty, so we downed even more beers). And just to make sure again that we got everything right, we're going on one last rehearsal this week, braving the sore legs and overworked livers.Though it was a thoroughly draining experience, we'll go the full yard to bring you, our Walkers, the very best! Even if it costs us our livers! So do return us the favour by checking out more information on The Tipple Exchange™ on our Tours page! And see you every Tuesday evening! 04 April, 2007 An interesting episode happened on our regular Secrets of the Red Lantern Walk™ just last Friday. As part of the tour, we bring our Walkers to explore deep into the heart of the red light district of Chinatown. As Savita, our guide, was telling our Walkers to observe discreetly their surroundings, and warned that there might be strange, mysterious men trailing the group, hoping to lure the menfolk out of the group, one of our Walkers actually came up to Savita and very quietly whisper, “I think there is a tall, big man who has attached himself to our group, and is trailing us!”She looked visibly shaken and kept telling Savita not to look too openly. “What shall we do?” she pleaded.Savita looked towards the direction that the lady was referring to, and whispered, “Oh dear, what shall we do?” And lo and behold as the mysterious “tall, big man” stepped out of the shadows. “And what is Jeya, my boss, doing trailing our group?!” exclaimed Savita. For he was none other than Jeya, our Director! This broke the earlier suspense and by then, everyone had got over their fears, and had become a bundle of laughter where they stood. To hear more of such happenings, join us on our Secrets of the Red Lantern™ Walk every Friday evening! And stay tuned to read more of such exciting stories here at Journeys! 31 March, 2007 Many apologies for disappearing for so long! So many things have been happening with the start of the New Year (both calendar and Lunar!).First up, we had some changes in the office make-up. We bade farewell to our dear Assistant Manager, Business Development, Marianne late last year. Henceforth we'll need to develop our business ourselves… Wait, it is our business after all! We'll definitely miss her jokes and banter in the office. We were nominated in the Tourism Awards yet again! Thanks once again to everyone who so supported the Original Singapore Walks®! This time, Geraldine got her long-overdue nomination for the award of Best Tourism Host – Tour Guiding. Though eventually she didn't win, we were happy to be there at the Awards for as the saying goes, to be nominated is recognition in itself! And we would never miss an opportunity to party and fill our bellies with beer! Check us out in the photos below!
Anyway if you've seen Geraldine in action we're sure you'll agree with us that she's an absolute winner! 07 December, 2006 Here's a rather macabre tale to relate. Our associate company Singapore History Consultants (SHC) is renowned for its educational Battlefield Tours. Often a small commemoration ceremony would be conducted at the end of the tour. A school representative would lay a wreath with a heart warming message. With each year passing, more groups were keen to include the ceremony and the wreaths in their tours. For many years their auditor hardly bat an eyelid when SHC's expenses included wreaths. It was only after a few years when the number of wreaths kept increasing that the auditor could not hide her curiosity. She somberly called up to ask if many of SHC's clients were very old and dying! She was very concerned why the death rate was steadily increasing each year! And no, the wreaths were not for our clients after they have received the bill from doing our tours!13 November, 2006 Most of us at Journeys woke up really early on Sunday yesterday to support our associate company Changi Museum and to attend the Remembrance ceremony was held at Kranji War Ceremony. The Changi Museum offered free guided tours where they focused on the role and deeds of Australian, British, Indian, Malaysian, New Zealand and Singaporean personnel during the Malayan Campaign (1941–42). It was a pleasant morning with not a threatening cloud in the sky during the ceremony and after. We were pleased to hear that many of them who came on the tours were very touched and inspired by what was shared. If you've never been to a Remembrance Ceremony, it takes place every year on the 11th of November or the second Sunday of November.
31 October, 2006 Happy Halloween! It may not be our local custom, but it hasn't stopped our clubs and coffeehouses decorating their premises with pumpkin-shaped lanterns and skeletons! This is an evening of trick or treating and TV marathons of horror-movies. We at Journeys headquarters experienced a spooky encounter one Tuesday morning. Our office is located in a conserved shophouse in Chinatown and this area is dubbed “Death Street” where in the past the poor and destitute came here to die in the death houses located here.It was an unusually quite morning at the office. Everyone was hunched in front of their computers typing away like mad scientists. Charmaine and Marianne were in quiet deep discussion, you could hear a pin drop. Suddenly, the front door swings open and a loud voice commands rapidly, “Charmaine and Marianne, here are the toothpicks! I've placed them on the staircase… gotta go!” Several of us jumped up in our seats! The voice belonged to none other than Helena who was doing Red Clogs Down Five Foot Way™ . She had her portable microphone switched on and her voice was amplified in our quiet office. She sounded like a voice from a higher power. Frankly speaking, all in the office were prepared to confess their sins including any they didn't commit when they heard the voice! If you wish to know why Helena was carrying toothpicks on her…why not ask her the next time you're on her tour? |
